Bennington College welcomes applications for a Managing Editor of the Bennington Review, a faculty-edited, nationally-distributed biannual print literary magazine of innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction housed at the College, facilitating the week-to-week operations of the magazine. 

Reporting to the Editor of Bennington Review, this position works closely with staff departments, including but not limited to alumni relations and communications, as well as external partners such as; subscribers, contributors, and submitters of work to the magazine; magazine distributors and printers; the cover artist; the journal’s designer and freelance proofreader; and external foundations. This is a part-time position, working fifteen (15) hours per week year-round. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Facilitate the week-to-week operations of the Bennington Magazine. Help the editor in day to day organizational and clerical duties as well as manage the design, layout, and production of the magazine. Manage the workflow and production schedule of Bennington Review.
  2. Meet weekly with the journal’s editor
  3. Assist the editor in proofreading and ordering each issue of the magazine
  4. Prepare each issue for copy editing and publication.
  5. Oversee website content.
  6. Manage publicity and social media. Develop and implement publicity for the magazine, including strategizing a social media and marketing campaign.
  7. Liaise with contributors, subscribers, distributors, the designer, the cover artist, the printer, and any external copy editor, as well as with the external Board and the external foundation.
  8. Fulfill subscriptions.
  9. Oversee and reconcile the budget; record sales and expenditures.
  10. Maintain up-to-date subscription and shipping databases.
  11. Very occasionally help organize readings and issue launches.
  12. Promote the journal at the annual AWP Associated Writing Programs Conference;  periodically conduct bookstore outreach. Prepare for and work at any applicable book fairs, such as AWP and potentially the Brooklyn Book Festival.
  13. Help develop strategies and projects to expand and diversify the magazine’s reach, visibility, and impact.
  14. Assist with the supervision of student interns.
  15. Assist with other Bennington Review projects as needed.

Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; an MFA in creative writing is strongly preferred.
  2. Prior experience working for a literary journal, press, or publicist is preferred.
  3. Familiarity with the contemporary literary landscape, as well as with literary magazines and/or small press publishing.
  4. Well-organized, flexible, and efficient multi-tasker and problem-solver who excels at working collaboratively, as well as independently and remotely.
  5. Ability to become quickly proficient with SquareSpace, social media platforms, Google Sheets, Word and Excel, is expected, in addition to proofreading and bookkeeping skills.

The College
