Title: Medical Quality Specialist

Location: United States, Remote (no onsite presence needed, but must reside in US) Local to Virginia Beach preferred

General Description


The Medical Quality Specialist provides administrative support, technical assistance, and guidance to the Medical Quality team and Operation Smile foundations based in Latin America and the Caribbean. The specialist is an important link with other Operation Smile departments and staff, facilitating interdepartmental projects, programmatic support, and communication. The Medical Quality Specialist will assist with the assigned acquisition, collating and tracking of medical information and quality reporting data. The Medical Quality Specialist will assume the responsibilities as assigned of data metrics in the form of collection, tracking, trending, interpretation, and analysis. The Medical Quality Specialist will engage as assigned to communicate, train, and update staff and volunteers in terms of medical quality and safety measures.


The Medical Quality Specialist oversees the maintenance of the Quality and Patient Safety databases, providing information on additional resources available for foundation staff and volunteers to ensure adherence to medical standards, policies, and procedures as directed by Operation Smile and local governing bodies of regulation.


Essential Functions

  • Aggregate, track, and trend data concerning medical events, complication rates, and quality measurement data obtained from assessments and post-mission reports for review by the appropriate committees, councils, and organizational leaders.
  • Draft reviews and reports regarding quality indicators of the various medical programs being conducted based on the standards, recommendations, and guidance of the Quality and Medical Oversight teams for use by the Development staff.
  • Coordinate, conduct, and assist in any quality research to include data and applicable reference of evidence-based practice information to support innovation and initiatives of new strategies and process improvement to ultimately mitigate unnecessary risks within Operation Smile’s safety and quality of care delivery.
  • Develop and maintain data and supporting records of care, as appropriate, to guide and advise various care reviews, updates, and development of Operation Smile Medical Policies in collaboration with Medical Oversight.
  • Serve as a liaison interdepartmentally to facilitate promoting, collecting, and accountability regarding all programmatic reports related to medical quality.
  • Coordinate any quality assessor updates, meetings, and conferences as required to include expense building, logistical functionality, and planning as assigned.
  • Work with all Operation Smile resources to expand Quality, Patient Safety, and Risk Management principles, ensuring Operation Smile maintains its reputation as a highly reliable organization. Develop and maintain appropriate communication engagement strategies with Operation Smile’s Foundations to best serve as a partner of quality care, patient safety, and risk mitigation opportunities.
  • Additional tasks as requested by the Vice President of Quality and the Quality Manager.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Associate degree in public health, management, administration, or a related health field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of experience in healthcare delivery from a clinical or non-clinical perspective.
  • 5 years of experience conducting infection prevention strategy, adverse event investigation, or medical care analysis.
  • Prior experience with medical quality and/or patient safety training.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in medical terminology (anatomy and physiology).
  • Comfortable with medical research on standards, best practices, and regulations.
  • Understanding of Human Factor Engineering as it relates to safety is highly valued.

Communication & Presentation:

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish.
  • Ability to present in both English and Spanish to large audiences and answer technical questions.

Analytical Skills:

  • Experience in developing data tracking spreadsheets and drafting statistical analysis reports.
  • Proficient in report development and review to identify areas of opportunity.

Process Improvement:

  • Experience in process/performance improvement is highly valued.
  • Risk management and mitigation experience is highly preferred.
  • Planning and facilitation of organizational objectives is highly valued.

Project Management:

  • Project coordination/management experience is preferred.

  • International travel will be required up to 20% of the year.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must combined with the ability to communicate across multi-cultural audiences.

Compensation:

Intended salary range - $56,000 to $70,000

This is a full-time salaried position, the compensation for this position will be determined based on several factors.
