As we look ahead to the next 150, continued collective action will be essential to securing a healthy, climate-resilient future for all. To support this work, we are looking for a Senior Project Manager to join our Operations team. 

 

What You’ll Do 

As a part of the team, you will oversee four major projects: (1) an IT systems analysis and alignment project, (2) the development and implementation of cross functional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Policies, (3) the IT update and refresh of its financial system, and (4) related change management, training, and documentation efforts. Major responsibilities include: 

 

IT Systems Analysis & Alignment 

  • Coordinate and manage the assessment of current IT systems across departments. 
  • Research and evaluate systems to recommend best-fit solutions. 
  • Develop a clear systems map outlining which platforms should be used for which functions.
  • Support implementation by a roadmap, budget, project plan, guidelines and leading training sessions, and ensuring smooth adoption of systems.

 SOP & Policy Development 

  • Work with departments to document processes, write clear and concise SOPs, and policies. 
  • Facilitate review, validation, and approval processes across teams. 
  • Translate complex processes into clear documents and executive-level presentations. 

 Financial System Implementation 

  • In close partnership with Finance, manage the re-implementation of AF’s financial system. 
  • Ensure project execution by managing the project timeline and budget, coordinating vendors/partners, and driving the system build and rollout.
  • Track progress, resolve issues, and ensure the system functions effectively to meet the needs of the business owners. 
  • Provide ongoing support during testing, training, and adoption phases. 

 Project Management & Coordination 

  • Develop, maintain, and track project plans using project management tools. 
  • Ensure tasks, deliverables, and timelines are met with consistent follow-up. 
  • Organize project documentation, prepare updates, and escalate issues when needed.
  • Coordinate training, communications, and change management to support adoption of new systems and processes.

What We’re Looking For

  • Minimum 3–5 years of project management or program coordination experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization. 
  • Proficiency with project management tools (e.g., Click up; Teams).
  • Strong research and evaluation skills for IT systems.  
  • Hands-on experience using Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Power Automate for collaboration, document management, and workflow automation. 
  • Experience using Agile methodology for system implementations. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to write SOPs, policies, and professional documents. 
  • Strong PowerPoint and presentation development skills; ability to present to executives and cross-functional audiences. 
  • Highly detail-oriented, process-driven, and skilled at follow-up. 
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, build trust, and manage input from multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with nonprofit operations/systems and supporting organizational change management and training initiatives desired.

Reporting and Supervision 

The Senior Project Manager reports to the Chief Operating Officer. This position will work closely with staff across multiple departments, including Operations, Forest Restoration, and Urban Forestry. This position does not have any direct reports at this time. 

 

Working Conditions 

This is a remote position, with preference given to candidates in Washington, D.C. Up to 5% of travel throughout the U.S. and/or to American Forests’ headquarters may be required.  

 

This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods and to operate a computer and other office equipment. Compensation & Benefits 

This is a full-time, salaried exempt position. The budget salary range is between $60,000 and $90,000. Our benefits package includes:
